Best Multi Tool for Backpacking - Leatherman Wave+ (Plus)

Founded in 1983, the Leatherman Tool Company just celebrated its 35th anniversary. They debuted their legendary tool to the masses, and it has been a hit ever since. Leatherman’s classic multi-tool designs feature durable pliers and Swiss Army knife capabilities. Unlike tools that came before it, many of the Leatherman’s features were interchangeable. When it comes to multi-tools, there’s really only one company on top. Today, we’re going over what just might be THE best multitool for backpacking and hiking. The Leatherman Wave Plus multi-tool is a fantastic full-size option. It’s packed with features and handy tools, plus it comes with a fantastic warranty

The LEATHERMAN Quality You Know and Love

First of all, the build quality of Leatherman tools is superb. The firm produces all of their tools in Portland, Oregon with the best quality materials. Hardened steel makes up the case and tools, and the sheath is also excellent. There’s plenty of options in the Leatherman line, but the Wave is particularly durable. For most light and medium-duty tasks, this tool will stand up well. Also, the knife blade is razor-sharp out of the box, so be careful. Keep in mind, the hardened steel screwdriver bits aren’t pry tools. If you avoid subjecting the bits to prying force, they’ll last a lifetime. After all, Leatherman doesn’t offer a lifetime warranty for nothing. Overall, the build quality of the Wave Plus is as good as it gets.

The Features Just Keep Coming and Coming

Leatherman included eighteen excellent features on their Wave multi-tool. First and foremost, the needle-nose pliers and wire cutters are a favorite. They fold into the tool when its not in use for easy storage, and they’re quite strong. What makes the Wave Plus differ from many other multi-tools is its outer knife blades. Unlike most multi-tools which require opening to access the knife, Wave can stay shut. This is advantageous if you need to open the knife with one hand. Additionally, the knife blades lock into place. As you might expect, the Wave features a saw, serrated blade, and scissors as well.

Also, the Wave features the essential bottle and can opener, so it’s great for parties and camping. The small saw on this tool is surprisingly effective. You can easily cut wood planks if you need to, or trim firewood without an axe. The screwdrivers in this unit are Phillips and flat-head, just flip them around. The small screwdriver is useful for glasses or small electronics, but don’t pry with it. Additionally, the wire cutters are removable for replacement or sharpening. Overall, the interchangeable features of this tool give it a long life.
